Happy Birthday to
The South Hills Junior Orchestra (SHJO) will open its 35th year of music-making Saturday, September 9, 2017 with weekly no-obligation, free-trial rehearsals from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Upper St. Clair High School (USCHS) Band Room.
Students in grades 5-12 are encouraged to come with their instruments and “try out” the orchestra any time throughout the year. In addition, adults are invited to “brush up” their skills (or learn something new) and join the weekly “training level” orchestra practices. No one has ever been or will be turned away! Rehearsals are stress-free opportunities for instrumentalists of all ages who want to develop their skills and artistry, explore orchestral literature, and collaborate with others in the making of beautiful music.
Performances for the special anniversary season will include a Fall Concert on November 12, 2017 at 3 p.m., a Holiday Charity Concert on December 17, 2017 at 2 p.m., and a Spring Concert on May 20, 2018 at 3 p.m.
Admission is free and these performances are held in the Upper St. Clair HS Theatre, 1825 McLaughlin Run Road, Upper St. Clair, PA 15241.
The directors, members, and boosters are inviting all SHJO alumni to a GALA BIRTHDAY PARTY. Find your instruments (even if you have not played them for a while) and come back to SHJO. Preparations are being made to revisit past SHJO hits The Pirates of the Caribbean, Procession of the Sardar, Drunken Sailor, Dances with Wolves, among other favorites.
Rehearsals will be extended on Saturdays throughout the month of June 2018 leading up to the Alumni Reunion and Anniversary Concert on June 24, 2018 in the Fort Couch Middle School Gymnasium.
SHJO is directed by an all-volunteer music staff led by retired public school teachers Paul Fox, Donna Fox and
David Levin. The Orchestra is nonprofit and non-competitive, and supports school string and band programs
throughout the Western Pennsylvania area. It is made possible in part by the Upper St. Clair School District,
professional music educators and community volunteers donating their services, and the SHJO Booster Organization.
In addition to supporting the educational ensembles, organizing the banquet, and funding of the gifts and
scholarships for the student instrumentalists, the SHJO Boosters Association, along with the players and music
directors, are proud of their long history of philanthropy and community service raising more than $30,000 for school district and local charities. In appreciation of 35-years of support in providing a home for SHJO, a“thank-you gift” will be presented to the Upper St. Clair School District on the June 24th concert.
